Sofia José Santos

PhD Researcher

Researcher at OBSERVARE and Associate Researcher at the Centre of Social Studies of the University of Coimbra.

PhD and a Masters in International Politics and Conflict Resolution from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra. Previously, she was a post-doctoral researcher at CES (2015) and a media and communication researcher and coordinator at Promundo-Europa (2014-2015). She was a journalist and editor of the Rede Angola Portal in 2013. He was a member of the Flemish Peace Institute (Belgium) research team as a visiting scholar in 2010, supervised by Dr. Tomas Baum, and was a vsiting fellow at Universiteit Utrecht (Netherlands) supervised by Professor Ton Robben, from September 2008 to February 2009. She was a junior researcher at the Centre for Social Studies from 2008 to 2015, where she co-coordinated and co-edited the P@x Bulletin, a periodic publication of the NHUMEP Peace Studies Group, from 2008 to 2014.

She specialized in Journalism at the Centro Protocolar de Formação para Jornalistas (CENJOR) and has a degree in International Relations from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra.

She was also a trainee at the United Nations Information Centre in Portugal (2003) and a senior technician at the International Relations Office of the Coimbra School of Education (2005-2007).

Its current research interests focus on issues related to media, peace and violence; cities and paradiplomacia; media, peacebuilding and liberal peace; media and politics of contestation; ‘big data’, privacy and internet governance; masculinities and violence prevention .
