Mattia G. Barbera

Researcher

Experienced economist with a global career in International Organizations, Government Agencies, Academic Institutions and the private sector. His mains skills are related to socio-economic and environmental research, international relations, sustainable development, private sector development, public policy, investments and project management (design, monitoring and evaluation), education, international trade and business analysis.

Holds a Laurea in Business and Economics at Bocconi University, Milan-Italy, specialization in International Economics and a final dissertation on Italian multinational corporations in Argentina and new forms of international investment. Master’s Degree in Environment and Human Settlements at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago-Chile with a final dissertation on the Environmental Impacts of the trade specialization of Latin America and the Caribbean. Among other several courses, he completed an Advanced Course on Development Planning and Management, Development Studies and International Relations and Organization, organized by the Italian Society for International Organization and sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Started his international career in 1988 at the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL/ECLAC) where he performed research activities and published several works. Later he was appointed Economic Research Coordinator at the Institute for European-Latin American Relations (IRELA), Madrid-Spain, a think tank funded by the European Parliament and the European Commission to inform and implement their policies in Latin America. This was followed by a brief lecturing experience in La Paz Bolivia, before starting an almost fifteen years’ service as economist, expert in development cooperation, at the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs with a broad spectrum of tasks that included representing the Ministry in some working groups at the OECD and the European Union. In 2008, Mattia moved to Auckland-New Zealand where he worked for the government as Senior Economist and Researcher at Auckland Council, having the possibility to lead several research projects and publish numerous reports. He then became Research Associate at the Institute of Public Policy of the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) where he collaborated in research activities and publications also at an international level and lectured for graduate and post-graduate courses.
