Jurist (University of Coimbra) and sociologist (Université Libre de Bruxelles), Master “en droit européen” by the Université Libre de Bruxelles and PhD in Economics, speciality “Economic Law of the European Community” by the University of Coimbra.
For over two decades he has been teaching and researching law and political science by analysing various dimensions of European integration, especially its international dimension and its dimension of social harmonisation; he is Associate Professor (exclusively) of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (Degree, Master and PhD in International Relations) and holder of the Jean Monnet Chair “Europe in the World” (retired since September 2012).
He has also been a guest lecturer at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra (Degree and Masters in European Studies), the University of the Azores, the Lusíada University, the University of Salamanca, the Université Libre de Bruxelles, the Université de Louvain-la-Neuve, the Institut d’études politiques (Sciences Po) de Bourdeaux.
In addition, among other duties, he was a lawyer (not practising), Principal Adviser to the Court of Justice of the European Union (1986-1990), associate researcher and visitor to the Institut d’études européennes of the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Université de Louvain-la-Neuve, CERI of the Institut d’études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po), Chaire Raoul Dandurand de l’Université du Québec à Montreal (UQAM), PUC-Rio and PEPI of UERJ.
He has also been an Integrated Researcher at the Center for Political Science and International Relations (NICPRI) and the Research Centre of the FCT.
