Andrea Carteny

PhD Researcher

Andrea Carteny is a university researcher of Eastern European History at the University of Rome, La Sapienza, associate professor with aggregation in the area of Modern History and the History of International Relations, professor of the History of Eurasia in the Licentiates and Masters of the Faculty of Letters and Political Sciences, as well as Executive Director of the Rome Committee of the Institute of Studies on the Unification of Italy.

He holds a PhD in European History from the University of Rome, La Sapienza, and carried out his doctoral research in Romania, Transylvania, at the University of Cluj, Babes-Bolyai, where he taught Italian History and was Executive Director of the Institute of Italian and Romanian Studies.

Topics of his research include: the Transylvanian question, Nationalism and Communism, Nationalism and the transition to democracy, ethnic and civic nationalism, comparative regional nationalisms in Western and Eastern Europe, the Basque and Catalan question, the Spanish national question, the Bulgarian national question, the Hungarian national question, the Balkan national question, theories on Eurasia, Imperial/Soviet/Post-Soviet Russia, national issues in the Caucasus, studies on Azerbaijan, the unification of Italy.

He speaks the main Western and some Eastern languages (Hungarian, Romanian, Serbian; it reads German and Russian).

He was a guest researcher (Basileus Scholarship) in Montenegro, at the Institute of History and guest professor at the University of Petru Maior, Targu-Mures; he was a researcher at CASD (Center of High Studies of Defense) and member of AffarInternazionali and of Geopolitica.info.

With numerous participations in international conferences and scientific meetings in Italy and abroad (e.g. ASEN conferences organised in London at the LSE and ASN conventions organised at Columbia University in New York), he is assistant for international cooperation to the Dean of International Relations at the University of Rome, La Sapienza, Prof. Antonello Biagini.
