Graduated in Economics from the Instituto Superior de Economia (ISEG) of the Technical University of Lisbon (1977), he completed, in 2016, the teaching part of his PhD in International Relations – Geopolitics and Geoeconomics at UAL.
He started teaching at UAL in 1995, having been teaching International Business in the last years. Previously he lectured International Economic Policy (Degree in Management), Political Economy (Degree in Law) and International Trade (Post-Graduation in International Business).
Currently Director of Caixa Económica Montepio Geral and member of the Board of Directors of UNICEF Portugal, since 2015 he has acted as Board Adviser for business development and internationalization issues of SIBS Internacional, S. A., member of the General Board of Montepio Geral – Associação Mutualista, chairman of the Board of the General Assembly of ACEPI, Associação da Economia Digital and member of the jury of the entrepreneurship awards of the European Commission Representation in Lisbon (since 2013);
He has lectured short courses, inter alia, on migration and the digital economy, at the National Institute of Administration, and on means of payment, at the University of Saratov (Russia) and at the Bank Training Institutes of Portugal and Angola.
In the field of scientific research, he was a member of the Board of CEDEP – Centre for International Economics Studies, from 1978 to 2009, and carried out work on international labour movement, for INIC, the Volkswagen Foundation (RFA), the Royal Economic Society (UK) and the OECD Technical Cooperation Committee.
He has published several scientific papers in Portugal, GDR, USA and Canada (namely, Breitenbach Publishers, International Migration Review, University of Ottawa Press, McGraw-Hill and Editions Colibri).
He was a Consultant at Galileu – Revista de Economia e Direito.
Since 2015, he has also acted as Board Adviser for business development and internationalization of SIBS Internacional, S. A., member of the General Council of Montepio Geral – Associação Mutualista, president of the Board of the General Assembly of ACEPI, Associação da Economia Digital and member of the jury of the entrepreneurship awards of the European Commission Representation in Lisbon, since 2013.
