OPEN LECTURE | STP FOREST AND LANDSCAPE RESTORATION PLAN. HOW INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATION CAN HELP IN DRAWING UP FOREST MANAGEMENT POLICIES

6 Mai 2025 – 16:00
Auditório 1

São Tomé and Príncipe has a diverse vegetation heritage, with different forest formations, from humid mountain forests and mangrove swamps to drier savannahs. These forests harbour an exceptional diversity of flora and fauna, providing considerable resources in terms of timber and non-timber forest products, which are of great socio-economic and environmental importance, specifically for improving the living conditions of local populations. However, there has been growing social pressure for the indiscriminate exploitation of forests, with a very negative impact in environmental and economic terms. Growing and increasingly competing demands for food, energy and urbanisation are accelerating the degradation of natural resources and ecosystems. With this in mind, through international co-operation under the Restoration Initiative (TRI), the Directorate of Forests and Biodiversity (DFB) received technical and financial support from the FAO, with funding from the GEF, to draw up the country’s first forest restoration plan, called: National Forest and Landscape Restoration Plan – An Assessment of Restoration Opportunities. This document aims to provide the country with an instrument that establishes guidelines for the restoration of forests and landscapes, guaranteeing the sustainable utilisation and conservation of forest resources for socio-economic development.
