The open classes cycle is part of the Advanced Course in Latin American Studies promoted by the Department of International Relations of the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (UAL), in partnership with the National Defence Institute (IDN).

Gathering a renowned group of specialists, this course is coordinated and moderated by Nancy Elena Ferreira Gomes and its objectives are:

  • To know and understand the specificities of Latin America: historical evolution, regional borders, states and subsystems
  • To study the Inter-American System: concept; origins; institutionalisation process
  • To study and understand the regional integration processes
  • To identify, study and understand the sources of conflict in the region, the disputes between states and criminality
  • To promote an in-depth analysis of the International Relations of Latin America, with an emphasis on Latin America-US, Latin America-European Union, Latin America-China, and Latin America-Portugal relations.
