Introduction
Geopolitics – a scientific discipline a little over a century old, seen primarily as the Spatial Dimension of Politics – is a vital tool for understanding and explaining the complex reality that surrounds us.
The Advanced Studies Course in Geopolitics, launched in a partnership between the National Defence Institute (IDN) and the Autonomous University of Lisbon (UAL), aims precisely to provide an in-depth understanding of the behaviour and interactions of Communities, States and Regions far beyond the ‘foam of days’. It combines, ‘quantum satis’, physical, human and economic geography with the ‘laws’ of geopolitics – from its various perspectives – as well as history, culture, strategy, political science and international relations, all under the serene, omnipresent and never neutral gaze of the geographical stage where people’s lives unfold.
Objectives
Bringing together a renowned group of specialists, this course aims to:
– Provide information and reflection on the conceptual, theoretical and methodological framework of Geopolitics, from classical thought to new approaches, and also including cartographic representation or the construction of scenarios and foresight;
– Promote in-depth analysis of current geopolitical dynamics and interactions, particularly in the global space and in certain regional areas.
– To develop an attitude of critical reflection on central and diverse contemporary issues from the perspective of geopolitics.
