Even taking into account the fact that Turkey is one of the European Union’s main partners, even in international institutions, the strategy of its President [Erdogan], apparently somewhat erratic, and using systematic internal repression against opponents of his political orientation, especially since the alleged coup attempt in 2016, has put the country at a crossroads, the outcome of which is still unpredictable. Objectively, relations between the parties have not been easy. It is precisely on the current climate of uncertainty or vagueness regarding European Union-Turkey relations that it is clearly important to promote a serious debate on the future of a partnership that is increasingly proving to be decisive both for the European Union and for this emerging regional power.
