The Department of International Relations at the Autonomous University of Lisbon and OBSERVARE deeply regret the loss of their former lecturer, Dr. Catarina de Albuquerque. She taught at the Autonomous University of Lisbon and was involved in human rights from an early age. Her humanistic spirit stood out, leading her to work within the United Nations, first at the UNDP and UNICEF, and later at the Human Rights Commission in Geneva. From 2008 onwards, she was a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council on water and the International Water Association, serving as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human right to water and sanitation. In recognition of the merit of her work, OBSERVARE awarded her the OBSERVARE Individual Award 2017.
With simplicity, wisdom, and forthrightness, she defended access to water as a human right and took up this cause as a humanist and humanitarian one. This is how she will be remembered.
