Doctorate in Ethics from the Lateran University (Italy) in 1967, with the classification “summa cum laude” (10/10) – academic degree recognized by the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
He was Full Professor of “Theories of International Relations”, Director of the Department of International Relations and member of the Scientific Council of the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa. Between 1992 and 2009 he was Vice Rector of this University.
He coordinated the Socrates Institute for Continuing Formation in the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa and headed the research unit OBSERVARE.
For 15 years, between 1974 and 1989, he headed CIDAC, a Portuguese non-governmental development cooperation organization.
Between 1989 and 1997 she taught “Philosophy and Deontology of Social Work” at the Instituto Superior de Serviço Social de Lisboa. He was Visiting Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra (until October 1998).
He currently coordinates the Master’s Degree in Peace and War Studies at the Autonomous University of Lisbon; he also teaches the Chair of “Globalisation and International Relations of Africa” at the Master’s and PhD in African Studies at ISCTE-IUL.
Since 1998, he has been a regular lecturer at the National Defense Course promoted by the National Defense Institute. During the school years from 2004 to 2007 he taught at the Institute of Advanced Air Force Studies and from 2006 to 2011 at the Joint Staff Course of the Institute of Higher Military Studies.
On 10 June 1998 he was decorated by the President of the Portuguese Republic with the Grand Cross of the Order of Liberty and on 7 January 2005 he was decorated by the President of the Italian Republic as Grand Officer of the Ordine della Stella della Solidarietá Italiana.
