In this open lecture, we propose to discuss multiple identities and how they are constructed in contemporary societies. Using the case of France, and in particular its multicultural education system, we will see how the relationship between French and languages of origin has been decisive in building a sense of belonging to French society. The French case will allow us to assess the central role that languages play in such fundamental processes as identity building and social integration.
