Luís Moita
Luís Moita was born on 11 August 1939. He has a PhD in Ethics (1967) from the Pontificia Università Lateranense (Pontifical Lateran University), Italy, awarded with the classification
summa cum laude (10/10) and accredited by Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Catholic University of Portugal).
He is currently Full Professor in "Theories of International Relations", Director of the Department of International Relations, and member of the scientific council of Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (UAL). Between 1992 and 2009 he was Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UAL.
He was the coordinator of the Socrates Institute for Ongoing Education at UAL and he presently directs the Research Unit OBSERVARE (Observatory for External Relations), which publishes a collection of books and two regular publications: the yearbook JANUS (published since 1997 in a co-edition with newspaper PÚBLICO) and the biannual journal JANUS.NET, e-journal of International Relations, published since Fall 2010.
He was Director of CIDAC, a Portuguese non-governmental organisation for development cooperation for fifteen years between 1974 and 1989. Between 1989 and 1997, he lectured the subject “Philosophy and Ethics of Social Work” at Instituto Superior de Serviço Social de Lisboa (Higher Institute for Social Work of Lisbon). He also was a Guest Associate Lecturer at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (until October 1998).
He currently coordinates the Master Degree in War and Peace Studies at Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa and lectures the subject “Globalisation and Africa ’s International Relations”, as part of the Master and Doctoral Degree in African Studies taught at the
Higher Institute for Labour and Management Studies (ISCTE).
He has been a regular speaker at the National Defence course offered by the National
Defence Institute since 1998. In the academic years 2004-2007 he taught at the Air Force Higher Studies Institute, and, since 2006, he has been a lecturer at the Institute for Higher Military Studies.
On 10 June 1998 he was distinguished with Grand Cross of the Order of Liberty by the President of the Republic, and on 7 January 2005 he was awarded the title Grand Officer of the
Ordine della Stella della Solidarietà Italiana by Italy’s President of the Republic.
Korinna Horta
Dr. Korinna Horta has more than twenty years of experience of environmental policy analysis and international advocacy.
She holds Ph.D. from the University of London, an M.A. from SAIS (Johns-Hopkins-University) in Washington, D.C. and a licenciatura from the Universidade Nova in Lisbon.
She has been a Yale University Stimson Fellow and a guest lecturer at universities in the U.S. and Europe. From 1990-2009 she served as a senior scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund in Washington, D.C.. At present she works on the environmental and social impacts of international finance for Urgewald, a non-governmental-organization. Since 2010 she also serves on the Compliance Review Panel at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, D.C..
Based in Lisbon, she has published widely, including numerous book chapters and research papers as well as articles in The Harvard Human Rights Journal, The Yale Journal of International Affairs and The New Scientist.
Evanthia Balla
Evanthia Balla has a PhD in Political Science and International Relations from the Catholic University of Lisbon (Portugal), a Master’s in European Studies from the University of Reading (UK) and a Master’s in International Politics from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium). She received her first degree in Political Science and Pubic Administrations from the University of Athens (Greece). She is a University Professor and a Scientific Researcher at Observare - Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa and the Instituto Jurídico Portucalense - Universidade Portucalense (Porto) and a regular columnist at the Portuguese newspaper o Jornal Económico (OJE). She has taught various courses at university level such as: European Union Law, Theory of International Relations and International Responsibility. She has been a consultant and researcher on EU legislation and EU business opportunities in Brussels, Lisbon and Athens.
Carlos Branco
Major General of the Portuguese Army (reserve). He holds a Master degree on Military Sciences (Military Academy, Lisbon). Among various military qualifications, he is a graduate of the Army Staff and War College. In addition, he attended an MBA on International Management (Católica Business Scholl, Lisbon) and is finalising a PhD thesis on Conflict Resolution, at the European University Institute, Florence (Italy). Also attended the High Level Course of the CSDP, at the European Security and Defence College (Brussels).
Extensive experience in the domain of politico-military affairs and international relations gained in various international assignments. He served with the UN, in the Balkans, before Dayton, as military observer. After, he served in the EUROFOR HQ, in Florence, as Chief of the Intelligence Analysis Section. In 2001, he was assigned to the Military Division of the DPKO, UN Head Quarters (HQ), in New York, as Peacekeeping Affairs Officers for the UN missions in the Middle East (Lebanon, Syria, Israel and Iraq/Kuwait border). He still was Battalion, Regiment Commander and Airborne Brigade Deputy Commander and COMISAF spokesperson, in Afghanistan. In 2008, he took the position of Deputy Director of the National Defence Institute and Army Director of Doctrine before being selected for the position of Director of Cooperation & Regional Security in the International Military Staff, at the NATO HQ. In this function, he was responsible for the strategic planning of NATO military cooperation with all NATO’s partners. And later, he was Deputy Director, at the War College, in charge of the research and development portfolio. In this latter quality, he was Chief Editor of the War College Scientific publications.
He authored more than 55 articles on technical-military, management, conflict resolution, and security and defense matters published in books, periodicals, and daily news, eight of them subject to peer review; and co-edited two books on peacekeeping matters. He has regular participation in debates and conferences and also lectured in several universities and schools. He is also member of several think tanks (national and international) and civic organizations. In 2009, he was co-scientific director of a post graduated course on Media and Crisis Management, at the Instituto Superior das Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (Lisbon). His major subjects of research and interest are peacekeeping, conflict resolution, strategic communications, NATO, United Nations and CSDP.
Raquel Vaz Pinto
Raquel Vaz-Pinto is Assistant Professor of University Autonóma of Lisbon and, since 2012, President of the Portuguese Political Science Association.
She is a member of the Scientific Council of the Catholic University of Mozambique and was Country Researcher for the European Union – Gulf Cooperation Council 2014 report within the Middle East and North Africa Programme (MENA) of the European Council on Foreign Relations. She was also the Portuguese member of the Study of the U. S. Institute on Foreign Policy 2013: American Foreign Policy and Grand Strategy that took place at Bard College, New York.
Raquel Vaz-Pinto is a Member of the Board Commission MA Human Rights, Law Faculty, University of Minho, Portugal and a founding member of the Global Young Academy as well as co-signatory of the 2008 Tianjin Statement of Global Young Scientists «Passion for Science, Passion for a Better World».
She has a PhD in Political Science from the University of Aveiro, an MSc in International Politics of Asia and Africa from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, and a BA in International Relations from University Lusíada. She was a Post-Doctoral Fellow (2006-2009) at the Catholic University of Portugal, where she was also Assistant Professor (2009-2014) and taught several courses at the BA, MA and PhD programmes. Both the PhD and the Post-Doctoral Programmes were conducted with a Grant from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.
Research Interests: Chinese foreign policy and strategy, religion in international relations and US Grand Strategy.
